アンテナと電波の話ばかりでは、さすがに肩が凝ります。もうひとつの趣味はカメラ。リグの前を離れて北海道を歩き、レンズ越しにしか見えないものを探すのが JL1EHQ の骨休めです。ここには、そんな旅で撮った写真を少しずつ置いていきます。 Antennas and propagation all day will stiffen anyone's shoulders. My other hobby is the camera. Stepping away from the rig to walk in Hokkaido, looking for what only shows up through a lens — that is how JL1EHQ rests. 知床・ウトロのオロンコ岩。オホーツクの風にさらされた岩の上は学術自然保護地区に指定され、たくさんの草花が群落をつくっています。急な階段をのぼりきると、あとは海しかない——その静けさに見とれて、しばらくシャッターを切っていました。 Oronko Rock rises straight out of the sea at Utoro, Shiretoko. Its windswept top is a designated academic nature preserve, carpeted with wild plants. You climb the steep stairway and there is nothing left but the Sea of Okhotsk — I stood there for a long while, quietly working the shutter.
ウトロ港から観光船オーロラ号に乗りました。岸を離れると、雲を載せたままの知床の断崖がつぎつぎに現れます。海の上には、草花とはまるで違う時間が流れていました。波間に浮かぶウ、風を切るカモメ、そして翼を広げたまま滑っていくオジロワシ。追いかけてもかなわないので、来るのを待つしかありませんでした。 We boarded the sightseeing boat Aurora at Utoro. Once clear of the pier the cliffs of Shiretoko come one after another, the cloud still resting on them. Out over the water, time runs on a different clock from the flowers up on the rock: a cormorant riding the swell, a gull cutting the wind, white-tailed eagles gliding past on motionless wings. There is no chasing them — you can only wait for them to come.
撮ろうと決めて出かけたわけではない写真ばかりです。搭乗口の窓から見たプロペラ、季節のあいだだけ開く小さな駅、道ばたで草を食む子鹿、そして帰りの便の窓。予定になかったものほど、あとで見返すと旅の匂いがします。 None of these were what I set out to photograph. A propeller seen through the gate window, a tiny station that opens only in season, a fawn grazing at the roadside, and the window on the flight home. The frames I never planned are the ones that smell most of the trip.
